Introduction

This is āyah 32 of Sūrat Al-Mutaffifin (The Defrauding), the 86th sūrah in the traditional order of revelation. It was revealed in the Meccan period and sits within Juzʾ 30. Meccan verses tend to address faith, the oneness of God, and the hereafter.

Verily, those who committed crimes used to laugh at those who believed (29)And, whenever they passed by them, used to wink one to another (30)And when they returned to their own people, they would return jesting (31)And when they saw them, they said: "Verily, these have indeed gone astray! (32)But they were not sent as watchers over them (33)But this Day those who believe will laugh at the disbeliever (34)On thrones, looking (35)Are not the disbelievers paid for what they used to do (36) The Wicked Behavior of the Criminals and Their mocking of the Believers Allah informs that the criminals used to laugh at the believers in the worldly life. In other words, they would mock them and despise them.
