Introduction

This is āyah 24 of Sūrat An-Najm (The Star), the 23rd sūrah in the traditional order of revelation. It was revealed in the Meccan period and sits within Juzʾ 27. Meccan verses tend to address faith, the oneness of God, and the hereafter.

Have you then considered Al-Lat, and Al-'Uzza (19)And Manat, the other third (20)Is it for you the males and for Him the females (21)That indeed is a division most unfair (22)They are but names which you have named - you and your fathers - for which Allah has sent down no authority.
