سُورَةُ التَّوۡبَةِ · 9:101
MedinanRevelation order ١١٣Juzʾ ١١Page ٢٠٣

وَمِمَّنْ حَوْلَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَعْرَابِ مُنَٰفِقُونَ ۖ وَمِنْ أَهْلِ ٱلْمَدِينَةِ ۖ مَرَدُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلنِّفَاقِ لَا تَعْلَمُهُمْ ۖ نَحْنُ نَعْلَمُهُمْ ۚ سَنُعَذِّبُهُم مَّرَّتَيْنِ ثُمَّ يُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰ عَذَابٍ عَظِيمٍۢ

Saheeh International · EN

And among those around you of the bedouins are hypocrites, and [also] from the people of Madinah. They have become accustomed to hypocrisy. You, [O Muhammad], do not know them, [but] We know them. We will punish them twice [in this world]; then they will be returned to a great punishment.

Introduction

This is āyah 101 of Sūrat At-Tawba (The Repentance), the 113th sūrah in the traditional order of revelation. It was revealed in the Medinan period and sits within Juzʾ 11. Medinan verses often address community life, law, and the building of society.

(And among those around you of the wandering Arabs there are hypocrites, and among the townspeople of Medina (there are some who) persist in hypocrisy�) [9:101]. Al-Kalbi said: �This verse was revealed about the tribes of Juhaynah, Muzaynah, Ashja�, Aslam and Ghifar. As for the townspeople of al-Medina mentioned in the verse, this refers to �Abd Allah ibn Ubayy, Jadd ibn Qays, Mu�attib ibn Qushayr, al-Julas ibn Suwayd and Abu �Amir al-Rahib�.

And among the bedouins around you, some are hypocrites, and so are some among the people of Al-Madinah who persist in hypocrisy; you know them not, We know them. We shall punish them twice, and thereafter they shall be brought back to a great (horrible) torment (101) Hypocrites among the Bedouins and Residents of Al-Madinah Allah informs His Messenger, peace be upon him, that among the bedouins around Al-Madinah there are hypocrites and in Al-Madinah itself, those, مَرَدُوا عَلَى النِّفَاقِ (who persist in hypocrisy;) meaning they insisted on hypocrisy and continued in it Allah's statement, لَا تَعْلَمُهُمْ ۖ نَحْنُ نَعْلَمُهُمْ (you know them not, We know them), does not contradict His other statement, وَلَوْ نَشَاءُ لَأَرَيْنَاكَهُمْ فَلَعَرَفْتَهُم بِسِيمَاهُمْ ۚ وَلَتَعْرِفَنَّهُمْ فِي لَحْنِ الْقَوْلِ (Had We willed, We could have shown them to you, and you should have known…
